A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest ways to transform your home, but there is plenty of misinformation out there about how to do it right. Between online tutorials and YouTube videos, advice from well-meaning friends, and tips from strangers at the hardware store, it’s easy to end up believing the wrong things, which in turn can lead to unimpressive results. That said, here are some of the most common myths about painting and why they aren’t true!
Myth #1: The Price of Paint Doesn’t Matter
It’s tempting to save a few dollars per gallon and go with what’s cheaper, since you may end up needing a lot of paint if multiple rooms or surfaces are going to receive a new coat. That said, low-priced paint usually means low-quality paint. There may be less pigment present or fewer binders, which means thinner coverage and a finish that scuffs, chips, or fades early. This matters even more when it comes to exterior paint, where your coat must withstand the elements. The bottom line here is, quality paints may cost more upfront, but you’re absolutely getting your money’s worth when you consider their appearance, functionality, and lifespan.
Myth #2. Any Time of Year Is Fine for Exterior Painting
Even if you live in an area where there’s sunlight and clear skies for most of the year, not every sunny day is a good day for painting. It goes without saying that you should avoid painting during rainy days or inclement weather, but as far as temperature is concerned, there actually is an ideal range. Most exterior paints do well in moderate temperatures with low humidity, so aim for a day when it’s between 50 and 85 degrees. This generally means late spring or early fall, while avoiding the brutal heat of summer.
Myth #3. You Can Simply Paint Over Small Flaws
It’s true that a new coat of paint can work wonders, but it can’t actually fix existing damage, and it should never be used to cover issues that need to be repaired. Cracks, holes, peeling spots, and water stains will often show right through a new coat if they aren’t properly addressed first. However, these are also the types of issues that won’t go away and will only worsen with time. Moisture problems can even cause new paint to bubble and peel, shortening its lifespan. Any painter, professional or amateur, should properly prep every surface before getting started!
